Captain Johnson is a native of Butler, Alabama. He enlisted in the Navy in January 1994 as a nuclear power Machinist Mate. Selected for the BOOST commissioning program, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Old Dominion University and commissioned through NROTC in 2002. He holds a Master of Science in Construction Engineering and Management from Stanford University and is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business Executive Development Program.
Captain Johnson assumed command of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Hawai’i in June 2026. He previously served as the Head Detailer for the Civil Engineer Corps and as Commanding Officer of Naval Construction Training Center Gulfport from 2022 to 2024.
His previous operational tours include an enlisted tour aboard USS Henry M. Jackson, SSBN-730 (Gold). As an officer, he deployed with U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) ONE as Headquarters Company Commander, Task Force Sierra Detail 4 Officer-in-Charge, Bravo Company Commander, and Assistant Operations Officer. He later served as Operations Officer for NMCB THREE with detachments across nine countries and completed an Individual Augmentee deployment to Afghanistan as an Embedded Training Team Advisor-Engineering in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Ashore, his career features extensive facilities and engineering leadership. Senior assignments include Executive Officer of Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport; Installations and Logistics Deputy Director and Facilities Director at Marine Corps Base Hawai’i; and Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command Pacific. Additional facility and public works tours include assignments at NAVFAC Pacific, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, NAVFAC Hawai’i, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Naval Support Activity Philadelphia/ Philadelphia Navy Yard, and Naval Weapons Station Yorktown.
Captain Johnson is a Seabee Combat Warfare qualified officer, a registered Professional Engineer, a certified Project Management Professional, and a member of the Professional Acquisition Corps. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and various other personal, unit, and campaign awards.
