Acting Executive Officer's Bio

Captain Steve Sherman reported to NR NAVFAC Far East as Officer-in-Charge in February 2023.

A lifelong resident of Minnesota, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1998 and a Master of Business Administration in 2003. He is also a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master of Strategic Studies.

CAPT Sherman was commissioned in April 2002 through the Direct Commission Officer program and first reported to NMCB TWO FIVE at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. In September 2002, he was assigned OIC of the battalion’s Minneapolis Detachment 0425. In October 2004, he took on concurrent roles as battalion Training Officer, Readiness Officer, and Ordnance Officer. During this tour, CAPT Sherman was deployed with NMCB TWO FIVE in 2006 to western Iraq in support of I MEF (FWD), additionally assuming the role as battalion Intelligence Officer.

Following deployment, he transferred and was assigned as OIC of Naval Special Warfare Combat Service Support Detachment THREE in January 2007, supporting all west coast SEAL Teams.

In October 2008, CAPT Sherman briefly returned to NMCB TWO FIVE as Assistant Operations Officer prior to mobilization with the 25th Naval Construction Regiment, where he did two deployments to Kandahar, Afghanistan, as part of Task Force Overlord. In 2009, he served as Current Operations Action Officer and returned to Kandahar with the 25th as their Current Operations Officer in 2011. After returning from deployment, CAPT Sherman reported to First Naval Construction Division as the Battle Staff Operations Watch Supervisor in 2012, prior to reporting to the Operations Officer role at NMCB TWO FIVE in August 2012.

As the NMCB TWO FIVE Operations Officer, he steered the battalion through two Field Training exercises and post-mobilization training prior to deployment to Afghanistan in March 2014. After returning from deployment to Kabul in December 2014, CAPT Sherman reported to Commander, Naval Forces Korea Engineer Detachment, where he served until reporting to NMCB TWO TWO as the Executive Officer in December 2015. In January 2018, he was assigned to the J42 staff of NORAD and USNORTHCOM as the Navy Reserve Engineer before returning to NMCB TWO TWO as the Commanding Officer in December 2020. During his command tour, the battalion was recipient of consecutive Battle “E” Awards for best Pacific reserve battalion in FY21 and FY22.

CAPT Sherman is licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota and is a PMI certified Project Management Professional. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and Army Commendation Medal, and he is both a Seabee Combat Warfare and Fleet Marine Force qualified officer. In his civilian profession, CAPT Sherman leads the global training team for a medical device manufacturer.
