Our goal is achieving global excellence by motivating young minds to solve tomorrow’s challenges with innovations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
For our nation, and NAVFAC to stay relevant, we need to think about our successors. So, we’ve been challenged to identify what works, what is needed and to find innovative solutions for current and emerging challenges in STEM Education.
One of our Environmental Engineers leads an annual STEM Camp up at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC).
The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) and the U.S. Navy (USN) collaboratively hosted a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Engineering and Construction Camp for high school students aboard Naval Base Ventura County. Students from communities throughout the United States stayed aboard Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme, California and engaged in hands-on engineering and construction activities such as:
-
Design, construction, and testing of concrete beams and wooden truss bridges
-
Construction of functional cardboard boats to be race in relay races
-
Construction and flight testing of an unmanned aerial vehicle
-
Construction and testing of a remotely operated underwater vehicle
-
Seabee Olympics (various construction themed team sporting events)
-
Tours of the Seabee Museum and various engineering Commands on base
We also partner with our Region STEM coordinators for Child & Youth Programs (CYP) and local school based outreach.
We have a team of STEM volunteers, procured materials and activities and are actively initiating community engagement.
Our vision is to increase the interest and engagement of young people in STEM by providing:
-
Mentors for aspiring students
-
Judges for school and club activities
-
Exhibits at STEM events
-
Donations to Child & Youth Programs
-
Base tours of interesting feature, ie dolphin training facility, cranes at waterfront, construction sites,
-
Donate activities, materials and time to schools, teachers and students.
