1860: Established the Navy’s first small naval coaling station at Honolulu Harbor, Hawaii.
1908: Decision made to make Pearl Harbor a major naval base in the Pacific.
1913: Transferred the Naval Headquarters from Honolulu Harbor to Pearl Harbor.
1916: Established the 14th Naval District at Pearl Harbor. Over the next 20+ years, the development of the base was a continuous process.
1916 - 1938: Assigned 14th Naval District Public Works Officer (PWO) with the responsibility for administration, supervision and direction of all public works activities within the District. Added additional duty of Assistant Officer in Charge of Construction in 1939.
Dec. 7, 1941: Stopped all construction and routine maintenance work during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Public works personnel buried the dead, cleared away debris, and prepared defenses.
1946: Established 14th Naval District Public Works Maintenance Division after various consolidations and reorganizations.
1948: Moved the Maintenance Division to a former Seabee site at Moanalua Ridge and renamed to 14th Naval District Headquarters Shops Division.
1952: Transferred various responsibilities, integrated telephone and fresh water systems, to the Division and renamed it 14th Naval District Headquarters Shops Department.
July 1, 1954: Established Navy Public Works Center, Pearl Harbor (PWC Pearl). Capt. Charles H. Plumlee served as the first Commanding Officer PWC Pearl in 1958.
1954 - 2000s: Experienced numerous consolidations, realignments, and growth; and expanded the Center’s geographical area of responsibility.
June 25, 2004: Celebrated the Center’s 50th Anniversary.
March 10, 2005: Established Naval Facilities Engineering Command Hawaii (NAVFAC Hawaii) and disestablished PWC Pearl. This change initiated a transfer of employees from PWC Pearl; Resident Officer in Charge of Construction, Pearl Harbor and Kaneohe; Navy Region Hawaii Facilities and Environmental Departments; and Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Pacific’s Integrated Product Team Hawaii.
Oct. 1, 2010: Stood up Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. NAVFAC Hawaii received Air Force military/civilians (~ 200 military & 250 civilians), increasing the command’s workforce.
Aug. 7, 2020: Change of Command Ceremony held. New Commanding Officer - Captain James G. Meyer.
