Across the country, the Navy has been conducting base-wide evaluations to identify additional potential PFAS releases. These evaluations are being conducted under the Navy’s Environmental Restoration Program which meets the requirements of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Following CERCLA, the Navy’s base-wide assessments are called preliminary assessments/site inspections, and their purpose is to verify, validate, and update the inventory of PFAS release sites aboard the installation for further investigation and cleanup.
At NAS Whidbey Island, the Navy has completed Preliminary Assessment (PA) for Ault Field (including the Area 6 Landfill). The PA identified 35 sites with known or potential PFAS releases that should be further evaluated in a Site Inspection (SI). The Navy has completed the SIs for all 35 sites, and 27 of those sites are proceeding to the next step in the CERCLA process, the remedial investigation. These sites include: the Current Fire Training School, Former Runway Fire School (Area 31), Former Area 6 Landfill, Ault Field Airfield (includes 21 sites), and the Ault Field Wastewater Treatment Area (includes three sites). The purpose of a remedial investigation is to delineate the extent of PFAS and conduct human health and ecological risk assessments to determine if a remedial action is required. The Final PA, Sampling and Analysis Plans, technical memorandums, and reports are under ‘Documents’. More information will be added to this website as it is available.
