YOKOSUKA, Japan— Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East awarded two contracts Sept. 28 to Oguragumi, K.K. for $10.5 million and $13.7 million for repairs to ship repair shops at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.

The facilities are essential to Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center (SRF-JRMC) Yokosuka’s mission to maintain and repair the USS George Washington (CVN-73), the USS Blue Ridge (LCC19) and other Seventh Fleet and transient vehicles.

"The two projects repairing the SRF- JRMC Machine Shop and Ship Fitter Shop are significant awards for Fleet Activities Yokosuka both in cost as the two largest special projects in fiscal year 2014 for Commander, Navy Region Japan (CNRJ) , as well as two of the largest design build projects awarded by Public Works Department (PWD) Yokosuka this year,” said Public Works Officer Cmdr. Ben Miller, PWD Yokosuka.  “These projects will go a long way in revitalizing our aging waterfront infrastructure while supporting the Forward Deployed Naval Force and our nation's rebalance to the Pacific.”

The 177,409 square foot (16,481 square meter) Ship Fitters Shop (A47) was built in 1914 and the 230,148 square foot (21,381 square meter) Machine Shop (A48) was built in 1936. Work on the two facilities will include replacing existing steel roofing, replacing portions of the roofing with Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic, repairing existing deteriorated concrete floors, replacing sliding bay doors with roll-up doors, replacing lighting and repairing the ventilation system. The work also calls for asbestos abatement in the roofing felt and piping insulation.

The completed project will offer shipyard workers a safer, more comfortable environment to complete the necessary repairs to the Seventh Fleet’s combatant ships.

Work will begin on A47 in October 2014 and is expected to be completed in October 2016.  Work on A48 will begin in October 2014 and is expected to be completed in January 2017.
